Hero of the Day: Representative Anh Joseph Cao (Louisiana), the sole GOP member that voted for the health care bill.

Cao is the first Vietnamese American as well as the first native of Vietnam to serve in Congress, and the first Republican to serve in his district since 1890. He won in a district that usually votes overwhelmingly Democratic. Cao is the poorest member of Louisiana’s delegation (including the state’s two senators) in Congress, as of 2009 his assets being no greater than $195,000 and his potential liabilities mounting to $215,000.

He did still vote for the amendment that prevented federal funding for abortion, but that’s a separate issue as far as I’m concerned (because let’s face it, as women, aren’t we used to taking a bullet for everyone else? The healthcare bill goes beyond gender discrimination). He’s a brave brave man to go against his party to do what’s right in his eyes, and I recognise that honesty as a positive trait.

(PS - waiting for the inevitable racial slurs)
